Second-hand fashion has a data problem that nobody in the transaction is positioned to solve. A buyer wants to know what an item is made of, whether it is genuine, how it has been treated and whether it can be repaired. The seller usually knows none of that.

The brand knows all of it, and has historically had no reason and no mechanism to share it with a transaction it earns nothing from. The passport changes both halves of that sentence.

What breaks in a resale transaction

Resale platforms solve identity by creating their own. A listing gets a platform identifier, some photographs, and whatever the seller types into a description field. That identifier has no relationship to the original product record.

The result is that every resale cycle discards the accumulated information about the item. A jacket resold three times has been described from scratch three times, each time by someone with less knowledge than the last.

Persistent identity is the whole mechanism

A passport attaches to the item rather than to the transaction. When ownership changes, the identifier does not, which means everything recorded against it remains reachable to whoever holds the product next.

That is a small architectural point with a large commercial consequence. Repair events, authenticity, composition and care instructions become properties of the object rather than of the original sale, and each subsequent owner scans the same code the first one did.

Authentication as a by-product

Authentication is usually treated as a separate problem requiring specialist services and physical inspection. Much of it is the same data problem viewed from the other end.

An item whose identifier was issued by the brand, whose record shows a consistent history and whose data carrier presents a credential signed by the brand is substantially harder to counterfeit than one authenticated by photographs and expert judgement. It is not a complete defence, because a carrier can be copied, but it moves the attack from replicating a product to compromising an issuer.

A resale market that runs on brand-issued identity is one where the brand sees the transaction, can offer repair or trade-in at the point of resale, and retains a relationship with the second owner. A resale market running on platform identifiers is one where the brand sees nothing and the platform owns the customer.

The choice is not whether resale happens. It is whether the brand is present in it.

Four practical steps make an existing passport programme resale-capable, and they are additive rather than a separate build.

Each step reuses infrastructure the compliance programme already requires.

The third step is the one most often got wrong. A passport that requires an account to read is useless to a second-hand buyer standing in a shop deciding whether to purchase, which is precisely the moment the data has value.

Does a passport prove an item is genuine?

It raises the cost of counterfeiting substantially without being a complete defence. An identifier issued by the brand, carrying signed claims and a coherent event history, is far harder to replicate than a label. A carrier can still be copied, which is why anomaly detection matters alongside verification.

Why can resale platforms not just use the brand data?

Because there has been no mechanism to reach it. Platforms mint their own identifiers precisely because no persistent, resolvable product identity existed. Where a passport does exist and serves an anonymous consumer view, a platform can read composition and care data directly rather than retyping it.
