How does a Digital Product Passport support the circular economy?

A passport gives each product a persistent identity and a machine-readable record of its composition, repairability and end-of-life routes. Repairers, resale platforms and recyclers resolve that record to identify the item and act on it, and write their work back so the product's history accumulates rather than resetting.

The measurement frameworks in ISO 59004 and ISO 59020 depend on facts about individual products — recycled content, lifetime, reuse and recovery. The ESPR requires those facts to be recorded; a circular programme is what makes them worth recording.

Frequently asked questions

Why do repair and resale programmes usually stall?

Because the item cannot be identified and its composition cannot be established. A repairer cannot order the right part, a resale platform cannot describe or authenticate the item, and a recycler cannot decide how to treat it. All three are identity and data problems before they are commercial ones.

How is circularity actually measured?

ISO 59020 provides a framework for measuring circularity performance, and the underlying inputs are recycled content, product lifetime, reuse and repair rates, and recovery at end of life. Those are facts about individual products, which is why measurement depends on having product-level records rather than corporate averages.

Does the platform run our take-back scheme?

It provides the record the scheme runs on rather than the logistics. Item identity, ownership transfer, condition assessment, recovered material and the events connecting them all live in CirculeID; the collection network, the reverse logistics and the refurbishment remain yours or your partners’.

Can repairs and resales by third parties be recorded?

Yes, and that is usually the point. Independent repairers and resale platforms receive credentials that let them write against the product identity. Their work becomes part of the item’s history, which raises what it is worth at the next transaction and gives you visibility you have never had after first sale.

Does this require item-level identity?

For repair and recycling routing, model level is often enough — the composition and disassembly data is the same across the model. For resale, ownership transfer and service history, item level is necessary, because the thing being tracked is the individual object rather than the design.
